Haul About Red -- A Trip to Chanel

About twice I year I venture to my Neiman Marcus to go the Chanel counter. Usually it's just to see what's new, but this time I had a mission -- red lips. I knew that with the release of the Holiday collection I would not be disappointed. I even ended up with a free bag of samples! Thanks, Chanel!

L-R: Pirate, La Precieuse, Rouge Rubis, Rouge

Rouge Allure Velvet 317 La Precieuse from the Holiday 2013 collection is a red that leans raspberry red. The soft matte finish is not too matte; it still has a creaminess about it. I have already worn this, and it is very long lasting. It does transfer though, so still use caution when you smooch your significant other. When I put this on my lips to wear it, it reminded me so much of Revlon's Cherries in the Snow that I had to swatch them next to each other.

L-R: Revlon Cherries in the Snow, Chanel La Precieuse

L-R: Cherries in the Snow, La Precieuse

As you can see, they are very similar. Cherries in the Snow is a bit darker and has more of a shine because it's a creme finish, but these colors are very close.

From the permanent line, I purchased the Rouge Allure 99 Pirate. Like the Rouge Allure Velvets, the Rouge Allures are intense, long wearing colors. Pirate wears similar to La Precieuse, the main difference besides the color is that it is a creme finish. The color is more of a true red and doesn't lean berry or orange -- exactly what I wanted! Like La Precieuse, Pirate is long lasting but will transfer.

I have such trouble with most reds feathering on me, so I was eager to put the Aqua Crayon Lip Colour Stick 11 Rouge from the permanent line to the test. The color is a true red that will work well underneath all shades of red. Rouge is easy to apply and sets quickly but can still be smudged out, and it's waterproof. The consistency is perfect! It's not so creamy that it doesn't stay put but not so dry that you have to use a lot of pressure to apply. I like to outline my lips then smudge the liner into my lips to fill in a bit. This process is repeated until my lips are lightly filled in and I have the desired color intensity. When I used it under La Precieuse yesterday, it didn't budge. The liner stayed on even after the lipstick had just a hint of fading. All of the lip products are very long wearing.

Also from the Holiday collection, I purchased the Le Vernis Nail Colour 677 Rouge Rubis. Rouge Rubis is a ruby red as the name would suggest and has a beautiful glossy finish. The thin consistency makes it easier to work with, and I didn't use a top coat because it is so glossy on it's own. It did chip on the same day that I applied it, though. This was featured in a Nail of the Day!

I am so excited to try these samples!

Nail of the Day: OPI Smitten With Mittens

Today's Nail of the Day is Smitten With Mittens by OPI. It was released in their 2009 Holiday Wishes collection. I must be in the Christmas spirit early this year! This is a red with subtle gold sparkle. The gold is more noticeable in the bottle than it is on the nails, but it does glisten in the sunlight. This polish was opaque in one coat, but I applied two coats for the best coverage. Red glitter polishes are so easy to wear because they are fun and festive without feeling too over the top.
In natural light

As you can see, my hands get extremely dry when the weather changes. I have been trying a few different hand creams and a cuticle oils in efforts to remedy the situation and will let you know if I find an amazing product or combination. Do you have a favorite hand cream?

Marc Jacobs Shameless Bold Blush in Outspoken

On my most recent trip to Sephora, I went to look at the new makeup line launched by Marc Jacobs. In addition to one of the nail polishes, I purchased the blush in the color Outspoken. I was drawn to this shade because the color is so unique -- a cool lilac pink. Outspoken is very pigmented but blends easily, and I really enjoy how well the color builds. Even though Outspoken is so pigmented, this shade is best suited for lighter skin tones. I get a full day's wear out of this blush without any fading.

Outspoken on my face!

On the cheeks, Outspoken appears as a bright blue based pink that I think will look fantastic with icy hues for winter or Spring pastels.

Have you tried anything from the new Marc Jacobs Beauty line? I would love to know what you think about it!

Fragrance Friday: Lolita Lempicka eau de parfum

Happy Fragrance Friday folks! This week I have been wearing Lolita Lempick eau de parfum. I have an adorable mini bottle of this fragrance that often gets neglected, but not this week. This week I have rediscovered why Lolita Lempicka is in my collection.

The initial spray of Lolita Lempicka eau de parfum is all about the licorice or more specifically the licorice-like smell of the star anise. The green of the ivy note along with the star anise and violet keep it from becoming a full on candy sweetness. As it continues to wear, I get a little powder from iris along with a hint of vanilla.

Lolita Lempicka eau de parfum is a very cozy scent without becoming overly sweet. I can get about 4-5 hours of wear before I need to reapply. I do wish this lasted a full day. The sillage is moderate and wears fairly close to the body. After a full day of wear, my husband only smelled the violets, but I could still smell licorice with a bit of soapy iris.

What fragrance have you been wearing and loving?

Nail of the Day: China Glaze Let's Groove

Today's Nail of the Day is Let's Groove by China Glaze. This color was released in their Retro Diva Collection in 2009, but it can still be found online. This is a shimmery dark purple with blue undertones. Let's Groove is a dark purple that doesn't look too dark, and it won't read almost black after it's applied. It has a smooth application and was opaque in two coats.

Do you have a favorite purple nail polish?

Small Ulta Haul and First Impressions

I recently finished up my daily moisturizer with sunscreen, so I went to Ulta to find something else to use. I was happy with my moisturizer (which I will feature in an upcoming empties post), but I just wanted to try something new. All of the Yes To products were buy one get one 50% off, so I started there. I've tried a couple of the Yes To Cucumbers products before, so I decided to try some other things. On that trip I ended up purchasing the Yes to Cucumbers Daily Calming Moisturizer with SPF 30 and Yes to Blueberries Deep Wrinkle Filler.

Sadly, the Yes to Cucumbers Moisturizer (not shown) just didn't work for me. The idea of a completely natural sunscreen is very appealing but doesn't work on my skin. It's too heavy and hard to rub in.

The Yes to Blueberries Deep Wrinkle Filler works well to plump up skin and add a little fullness. Applied after moisturizer, it claims to immediately reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. This product is nothing more than a gimmick, but it does have an immediate effect and feels nice on the skin. It is meant to be applied to small areas as opposed to the entire face. The consistency is thick without being too heavy under makeup.

On my next trip to Ulta to return the moisturizer, I decided to try the Olay Complete Defense All Day Moisturizer with Sunscreen SPF 30, Sensitive Skin. So far, this has been working out. It's oil free and is moisturizing without feeling too heavy.

My final product is the NYX Wonder Pencil in the color Light. It claims to work as a concealer, eye brightener, and reverse lip liner in one. I got it to use as a reverse lip liner. I love a red lip but have a lot of issues with reds feathering on me. I'm still working on finding the best way to use this. Look for a full review later.

Fragrance Friday: Elie Saab Le Parfum

Happy Friday! Let's talk fragrance.

I love perfume! In my line of work, I have to be very careful with wearing fragrance. Often, I cannot wear any at all, so I enjoy every opportunity I have. I do not claim to have an expert nose, but I would love to tell you what I smell.

Elie Saab Le Parfum is a sweet white floral with moderate to heavy sillage. To me, this is more moderate sillage, but this could lean heavy when over applied. She is very much a lady; her presence is known without the need to scream for attention. It is not an offensive fragrance. Elie Saab Le Parfum isn't sweet in a candy, bubblegum sort of way; all of this sweetness is floral and honey.

Elie Saab Le Parfum begins with a bright opening of orange blossom. As it dries down, the white floral of jasmine begins to take over. The final dry down is a honey rose jam with a bit of clean powder.

Elie Saab Le Parfum is classy and timeless, and I think women of all ages can enjoy wearing it. The floral element reminds me of spring, but it is appropriate for any time of year.

Orange Eyeshadows

Today's post is inspired by Zooey Deschanel's makeup in this week's episode of New Girl. While her makeup is usually the same every time we see her on or off screen, this week a little color was added to her eyes -- orange. It made her blue eyes pop even more, and I didn't even know that was possible. Having blue eyes myself, I decided to recreate the look for myself -- a couple of orange and peach eyeshadows that I own coming to mind. That left me diving into my makeup collection to see what I have in orange, and well I'll just show you what happened.

Yes, I have more orange shades than I thought and some palettes that have been grossly neglected.

On Zooey, the rest of her makeup was the same as it usually is with a soft peachy cheek and a bright but sheered out red lip. On myself, I used a mixture of MAC Mythology and Laura Mercier Baroque on the eyes with brown liner, a nude cheek, and a glossy rosy lip. I tried a bright red orange lip, but it just didn't work for me with this look.

Here's some swatches of the orange and peach shades in my collection.

Nail of the Day: Marc Jacobs Enamored Hi-Shine Lacquer Flourescent Beige

I love a neutral nail, so when I went to look at the launch of Marc Jacobs Beauty I was immediately drawn to the Enamored Hi-Shine Lacquer in Flourescent Beige. This lacquer is a light mauve color with a pink micro shimmer.

While a little sheer at first, it was opaque in 2 coats. The application was nice and didn't streak.I was really impressed with the brush; it's small enough to be precise without being too small and seeming like a nail art brush. Like a Chanel nail polish the lid comes off, so you have a smaller handle for easier application. This particular nail lacquer dries quickly, and I didn't have any problems with smudges.

The box claims that this lacquer has a wet look, plasticized finish, and extreme wear. While it does maintain shine, it's not any shinier than any other nail polish I have come across.

This color is similar to Essie's Ladylike, but the only difference being Flourescent Beige has a pink micro shimmer.

Total Intensity by Prestige Long Term Relationship Fierce Color Eyeshadows

I have heard such great things about Prestige. People rave about their mascaras and lip liners, but when I saw the Total Intensity eyeshadows at Ulta, I knew this was something I needed to try. This is a line of 9 shimmery eyeshadow singles and 4 trios. With a price of only $8.49, I acquired 3 of the singles in the colors Bewitched, Black Magic, and Hocus Pocus. Can we just start with these names? They are so perfect for this time of year!

Bewitched, Black Magic, Hocus Pocus

Bewitched is the most neutral of the colors in the entire line. It's a beautiful shimmery beige taupe brown. Black Magic is an intense black with silver sparkles. Hocus Pocus is an amazing duo chrome shade. It looks almost black in the package, but I get bits of green and burgendy depending on how the light hits it. In the pan, Hocus Pocus really reminds me of MAC's Club eyeshadow, but as you can see below, it is far more intense. Club almost looks like a darker version of Bewitched when swatched.

Hocus Pocus, MAC Club

These colors are so beautiful, but they are tricky to apply. When applied dry and with a brush, these eyeshadows have some major fallout and have a patchy application. I had less fallout and application issues when I applied using a wet brush. This turned the product into a cream consistency making it easier to apply. My favorite method of application for these eyeshadows is to use my fingers. I am not a fan of using my fingers to apply powder eyeshadows, but for these unique gems it really is the best way. You can really build up the color and keep fallout to a minimum.

Overall, these are amazing eyeshadows that would be perfect for a dramatic Halloween look or to add some shimmer to your daily makeup routine.
