Theatrical Makeup -- Queen of the Night

The majority of my makeup knowledge stems from theater and opera and taking a few workshops on stage makeup. I have always loved makeup, but it wasn't until learning a few things from stage makeup artists that I understood exactly what makeup could do to transform and create a look. While I am not a makeup artist, I have done my own stage makeup more times than I can count and have helped colleagues out with their own.

I've been wanting to add more creative and theatrical elements to this blog, so I decided to tackle a character from an opera. For this first opera look, I decided to chose the Queen of the Night from Mozart's The Magic Flute.  Here's what I would do if I were creating a look for this character!

On my face:
Estee Lauder Idealist Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher - to prime
Makeup Up For Ever Mat Velvet+ Matifying Foundation (shade 20, I think)
Origins Multi-Grain powder in Light
Clinique Redness Solutions Instant Relief Mineral Powder - used under the eyes to catch eyeshadow fallout
CoverFX Camouflage Concealer in X-Light
MAC Blush in Strada - to contour
MAC Blush in Plum Foolery

On my eyes:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Wet N Wild Shimmer the Night Away palette - dark black shade on the eyelids and blue taken out and blended in the crease
Milani Shadow Eyez pencil in Winter White
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero
Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lash Extending Treatment Mascara

On my lips:
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Shameless

Had I more materials at my disposal, I would have added some wild false lashes with gemstones or feathers and applied some rhinestones to the outer corners of the eyes. A long black wig would have been nice too.

It is so much fun to play and create characters through makeup. I hope to do more of these here on this blog!
