Winter Empties & a Giveaway

I challenged myself this past year to make an effort to use up my products. So many samples had accumulated in my stash, and I wanted to give them a try. As much as I enjoy reading empties posts, I don't plan on doing these anymore. I will be posting my empties on Instagram and Facebook as I finish them. I prefer to toss out the containers in the recycling as they get used.

Jurlique Rose Shower Gel - I enjoy Jurlique products so much that I even did a post just about this brand. I really appreciate that they use more natural ingredients than other brands while still maintaining a luxury feel. I already have another shower gel in the lavender scent.

Paul Mitchell The Wash Moisture Balancing Shampoo - Normally, I find a most shampoos that aren't sulfate free very stripping and harsh on my hair, but that is not the case with this shampoo. I liked this. It is a nice all-around shampoo.

La Prairie Cellular Cleansing Water - This is a sample that I had. I used it to remove my makeup. It was okay. I think there are better cleansing waters out there for way less.

Sisley-Paris Floral Toning Lotion - This toner is alcohol free and for sensitive skin. It was really nice and did provide my skin with extra moisture, but I'm not sure if it's worth the price. I'm glad I got a chance to sample it, though. I enjoyed using it.

Givenchy Play Intense - My husband actually handed this bottle to me when he finished it so that I could put it in an empties post. How could I possibly not include it? It makes perfect sense, though. I bought this cologne for him when we were dating. It's a very sexy woody oriental. If you want to buy a cologne for a man in your life, go give this one a sniff!

Skinfix Hand Repair Cream - I got this sample in an Influenster box, and I love it! It contains colloidal oatmeal and really helps dry cracked hands. I have a lot of hand creams right now, but I plan on getting a full size of this one.

Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer - I got this in my first Play! by Sephora box. I applied this to my hair before using a hairdryer. It made my hair feel smooth without weighing it down. I used this up rather quickly because I enjoyed it so much. I plan on getting the full size. This is good stuff!

Shu Uemura Cleansing Beauty Oil - I had this sample for a long time because I would only use it when I was traveling. It works so well at removing makeup while keeping the skin balanced. This is a great cleansing oil. I would love to have the full size.

Perricone MD High Potency Evening Repair - I know the products are expensive, but I always like how my skin looks when I use Perricone MD products. Science will always win over "miracle" products. I used this as a night serum, and it made the texture of my skin softer and smoother.

Perricone MD Neuropeptide Firming Moisturizer - This is a thick moisturizer that I used at night when it was cold. My skin doesn't agree with thick moisturizers when it's warm, so I have to adjust my skincare accordingly. It was a nice moisturizer, but not for my skin right now.

Maybelline the Rocket mascara - I'm a huge fan of this mascara and even posted a review of it. It's a great volumizing mascara, and I will buy it again.

Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Primer - This is a sample that came with a palette. It works pretty well, and a little goes a long way. I already have another one from another Lorac palette.

One of my goals for the year is to include more giveaways in my posts. I buy the vast majority of items myself, but I still want to give back. Here's what I'm giving away: NYX Runway Chic eyeshadow set, NYX Glam Shadow Stick Collection, and a Maybelline The Rocket mascara.

Glossybox & Play! by Sephora | January 2016

Since my Glossybox and Play! by Sephora box arrive within days of each other, I thought I would just show you both in one post. I don't want to compare the two because they are very different, price being the main one, but I do want to show you in one subscription box post.

What is Glossybox?

  • Monthly beauty subscription service
  • Delivers 5 deluxe and/or full size products
  • $21/month - 6 month & 12 month options
  • Subscribe to Glossybox, and get points for referring people and for taking surveys on the products included in the box. Here's my referral link for anyone interested.

What's in my January Glossybox:
Beautiful Nutrition Lemon Rinse Gentle Clarifying Treatment - This is a rise that you use after shampoo and conditioner to remove buildup and balance the scalp. My scalp isn't great, so I'm very interested in testing this out. A full size is only $10, so I hope it works for me!

Royal Apothic Cream Crème To Go - I got this in the white floral Cutting Garden scent. It's a very moisturizing body cream, but it is heavily fragranced. I happen to love white florals, so I think I'll use this.

-417 Foot Nourishing Cream - Foot cream isn't something I normally use, but this may come in handy when I start wearing sandals again. It has a nice light scent to it. It feels moisturizing, so I may just use it as a body cream.

Emite Make Up Diamond Heart Base Primer - This is an illuminating primer. I'm not really into primers, but I'm trying new things this year. I've used this once, and it did give my skin a dewy look. Strobing and having glowing skin is on trend right now, so I'm going to keep using this to see how I feel about all of that.

MeMeMe Lip Glide in Playful Peach - This is a long-wearing matte lip pencil. I love pencil lipsticks, so this is a win for me! The color is really pretty. I'll wear this a lot.

Overall, I like all of the items in this box, but I'm getting a little tired of receiving lotions in every box. There are two in this one. I just can't use them fast enough. Now on to the Play! by Sephora box!

What is Play! by Sephora?

  • $10/month beauty subscription box
  • 6 samples of products from Sephora
  • sign up at sephora.com/play
  • comes with a Play Pass that you redeem in store for 50 extra Beauty Insider points
  • This month's theme - No Appointment Necessary

Sephora Collection Green Tea Eye Mask - A set of little sheet masks for under the eyes. Perfect for an at-home spa day.

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Original Formula - I've used this before, and I really like it. This box contains three peels. I'm happy to have this again.

Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight - This highlighter adds a lot of brightness to the face without looking too shimmery or over the top. Not something I would have purchased on my own, but I like it!

Living Proof Prime Style Extender Spray - I like Living Proof products, but I haven't tried the spray. I'm excited to give this one a try!

Dr. Brandt Needles No More - It claims to instantly smooth expression lines. You apply it before your moisturizer. Sounds interesting!

Tocca - Isabel eau de parfum - I love sampling perfumes. This one has notes of rose, orange, and leather. It's a different take on rose. I like it, but it's not one that I would buy in the full size.

For me, this box is an improvement from the last couple of boxes from Sephora. Even if everything doesn't work out, at least there are interesting products in here and items that I would not have tried otherwise. That is why I have this subscription. I'm feeling better about this service, so I'm not going to cancel just yet.

Wearing the Clinique highlighter (inner corner of eyes & tops of cheeks) and the lip pencil from Glossybox

Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons Palette

I was so happy to receive the Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate palette as a Christmas gift. That quickly put me on the Too Faced Chocolate everything bandwagon. The Chocolate Bon Bons palette was not far behind. I got it and have been using it like crazy!

The Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons palette is the third palette to in the Chocolate bar series of palettes. This palette contains 16 shades that, like the other chocolate palettes, smell of chocolate. There are 14 smaller heart-shaped shades and 2 larger, highlighter type shades. There's also a How-To Glamour Guide showing how to create three different looks using this palette. I don't usually pay attention to those, but they can be a nice starting point if you don't know what to do with your palette.

From the Ulta website - Shades:
Cotton Candy (iced bubblegum pink)
Almond Truffle (matte mauve)
Pecan Praline (cool greige)
Mocha (matte suede)
Bordeaux (matte plum brown)
Sprinkles (gilded rose)
Totally Fetch (electric fuchsia pearl)
Dark Truffle (cherry cola shimmer)
Cashew Chew (satin nude)
Satin Sheets (golden pink)
Earl Grey (smokey sapphire)
Black Currant (deep metallic amethyst)
Malted (gilded cocoa)
Café Au Lait (metallic taupe)
Molasses Chip (metallic cocoa bronze)
Divinity (matte warm cream)

I find the color selection in this palette to be really interesting. This palette has neutrals that are a bit different than a typical nude palette, and there are some really fun colors. There's something for everyone in here. I really like the mix of mattes and shimmer shades with a couple of glittery shades thrown in. I will say that if you're someone who only wears neutrals and never strays into color territory, then this may not be the palette for you. There will be some colors that you will never wear. The color selection is perfect for anyone wanting to add a little more color to her eyes.

Top Row: Almond Truffle, Satin Sheets, Sprinkles, Molasses Chip, Malted
Middle Row: Cashew Chew, Cotton Candy, Café au Lait, Bordeaux, Mocha, Black Currant
Bottom Row: Dark Truffle, Pecan Praline, Totally Fetch, Earl Grey, Divinity

When I first opened this palette, I was immediately drawn to Molasses Chip and Café au Lait. There's so much that you can do with a shimmery bronze and a taupe. The colors are pigmented and apply smoothly. Some of the more glittery shades do have some glitter fallout, but it wasn't as much as I was expecting, especially when I used Café au Lait. It doesn't make too much of a mess, and I can still see the glitter after I apply the shadow.

Here are some of the ways I have been using this palette.
Molasses chip - lid and lower lash line
Malted - outer corner
Almond truffle - crease

Divinity - under brows
Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir mascara *
Tarte skinny smolderEYES liner - Moonstone Brown
On my eyes:
Cotton candy - inner 1/3 of lid
Totally fetch - center of lid
Bordeaux - outer corner, in crease, & lower lash line
Dark truffle - deepen outer corner
Sprinkles - inner corner highlight
Satin Sheets - under brows
Tarte Skinney SmolderEYES liner - Moonstone Brown
Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Mascara *

On the rest of my face:
Laura Mercier Mineral Pressed Powder - Tender Rose

On eyes:
Café au Lait - lid
Black Currant - outer lid
Pecan Praline - crease
Divinity - under brows
On the rest of my face:

Café au Lait - lid
Earl Grey - outer corner & lower lash line
Pecan Praline - crease
Divinity - under brows
Satin Sheets - inner corner highlight
Marc Jacobs Highliner Eyeliner - Blacquer
Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Mascara *

As you can see, I have been using this quite a lot. You can get so many fun looks out of this palette along with plenty of everyday options. I am having so much fun with this palette!

Do you have the Chocolate Bon Bons palette? Do you have a favorite Chocolate Bar palette from Too Faced? Another favorite palette I need to try? Let me know!

Lancome All-Over Face Palette Day to Night Look

Lancome is a brand that, aside from a couple of mascaras and various samples from Sephora, I haven't explored. The Day to Night Look All-Over Face Palette, even though it was a holiday palette, is a nice introduction to many of the other products Lancome has to offer. Lancome usually offers some kind of limited edition all-over face palette throughout year, though. Right now, Lancome has a limited edition Jason Wu for Lancome All Over Face Palette

This palette is very portable. It's a bit thicker and wider than my phone and around the same size as a small planner. Inside, there are nine Color Design Sensational Effects Eye Shadows, one Blush Subtil Delicate Oil-Free Powder Blush, and one Star Bronzer Long Lasting Bronzing Powder. From what I can tell, all of the colors are limited edition, but I really don't think there's a color that's so different in this palette that you can't find something at least close in the permanent line.

Top Row: Blizzard, Starlight, Onyx Eve,
Middle Row: Warm Cocoa, Fox, Smolder
Bottom Row (eyeshadows): Cashmere, Fawn, Mink Me
Blush/Bronzer: Everything Nice, Cinnamon and Spice

This is a great palette for someone that works in a very conservative setting. These are very safe colors, and you can create looks that are as subtle or loud as you want with this palette. I really liked the matte eyeshadow shades --Fawn, Mink Me, and Onyx Eve. They were very creamy and blendable and make me want to check out more matte eyeshadows from Lancome. The silver eyeshadow, Blizzard, was probably my least favorite shadow in here. I really like the color, but it's not pigmented and doesn't apply well at all. These sparkle eyeshadows get glitter all over your face, and I couldn't get this one to build up any color. The best way for me to use it is as a topper over other eyeshadows applied with my fingers. Using a brush just gets glitter everywhere. The peachy pink blush was a great choice to include in a face palette. It's pigmented and would work on a lot of different skin tones. The bronzer, Cinnamon and Spice, is very light. I'm pretty pale, and this barely showed up on me. I think it would make a nice matte eyeshadow color, though.

In the photo above I'm wearing the blush and bronzer from the palette and some of the eyeshadows. On my eyes: Fox-inner part of lid, Starlight on lid and into the crease, Cashmere under eyebrows, and Onyx Eve is used as a liner.

What's on the rest of my face:

I apologize for showing you items that aren't available anymore, but part of me sees these palettes and limited edition items as a chance to get an overview of brands to see what I like and don't like. Hopefully, you can find some bit of information in all of this helpful.

Tarte Golden Days & Sultry Nights Palette

From drugstore to the highest of the high end, it seems like more and more brands are cashing in on the appeal of limited edition products. I may be wrong, but I blame MAC and their millions of limited edition collections for starting this trend that gets us beauty junkies to buy even more makeup.

Tarte does lots of different limited edition eyeshadow palettes. I've been really impressed with this brand in general ever since they came out with their Amazonian clay products. I have the Tarte Golden Days & Sultry Nights palette. This is a limited edition palette that was part of Tarte's summer collection, but it is still available at Dermstore.

The Golden Days & Sultry Nights palette contains five Amazonian clay eyeshadows in the colors Toes in the Sand (matte ivory), Espadrilles (matte taupe), Caparinha Cocktails (gold), Oceanview (jade), and Tropical Sunset (bronze). There are two matte shades and three shimmer shades in this palette.

I'm really impressed with the quality of the matte shades. They're very creamy and pigmented. Espadrilles (matte taupe) is the perfect shade to blend into the crease, and Toes in the Sand is a great matte highlight shade. The shimmery shades are nice too, but they are all quite different in texture and consistency. Caparinha Cocktails (gold) was the shade I was most excited to see in this palette, but it was the trickiest to apply. First, I used a flat eyeshadow brush to apply it over my typical eyeshadow primer -- Too Faced Shadow Insurance. There was so much fallout with this glittery eyeshadow that I looked like I had been glitter bombed. Then, I tried applying the shade wet. This was a little better, but I still had some fallout. Last, I applied this shade of the Too Faced Glitter Glue. I had the most success with the glitter glue, but even then, there was some fallout happening. I love sparkly gold eyeshadows, but fallout seems to be common with all of them. Oceanview is described as a jade color, but it seems more turquoise to me. I wish it was a little more pigmented, but it's quite wearable to not be a neutral. Tropical Sunset is the star of this palette. It's incredibly pigmented and swatches and applies like a dream!

Here are a couple of looks using this palette.

Toes in the Sand - under brows
Caparinha Cocktails- inner part of lid
Tropical Sunset - outer part of lid
Espadrilles - in crease and along lower lash line

Too Faced Get It Before It's Gone - Soul Mates Blushing Bronzer & Amazing Face Foundation

Hey everyone! Happy 2016! I hope you had a great holiday season. I got a lot of makeup for Christmas, so expect to see a lot of reviews. A lot of it was limited edition or things that have been discontinued. I made the decision to review everything anyway because due to HauteLook and other flash sale sites, you can usually still find discontinued items in a new condition. Sometimes, you can even get lucky with Amazon or Ebay. I decided to start with several items from Too Faced. A couple of these are currently on sale online, and a couple of these seem to have already been discontinued.

I have the Too Faced Soul Mates Blushing Bronzer in Ross & Rachel. There's another one called Carrie & Big. I love the names! Ross & Rachel has medium to deep bronzer with a pink blush. (Carrie & Big is lighter with a peach blush.) Even though I have the darker color, it blends out nicely with a fluffy bronzer brush and isn't too dark for my pale skin. The blush and the bronzer have a slight shimmer but no glitter in them. The Soul Mates Blushing Bronzers are currently on sale on the Too Faced website.

The Too Faced Amazing Face Foundation is another item that's currently on sale on the Too Faced site. (Many of the colors have sold out, but I see that Beauty.com and Dermastore still have some left.) I have it in the color Vanilla Creme. This is an oil free liquid foundation that is very buildable without looking cakey. I can apply this foundation with my fingers for a more sheer coverage, or I can use a brush to get more coverage. It doesn't settle into to any pores or lines (a major gripe I have with liquid foundations), and I prefer wearing this without a setting powder. I'm wearing the foundation and the Soul Mates blush and bronzer duo in the picture below.

On the rest of my face:

I also have a couple of the Too Faced Full Bloom Ultra Flush Powder Blushes in Who's Your Poppy and Sweet Pink. These have been discontinued, so you can't really find them. I did manage to find Sweet Pink on Amazon. Both of these shades are very pigmented and blendable. Sweet Pink is a great shade for fair skin. I love wearing this color blush with a red lip. Who's Your Poppy is a very pigmented peachy pink shade that will look great during the summer.

Wearing sweet pink. Rest of makeup is the same as above.
I'll stop there for now, and I'll be back soon with more reviews! Do you have a favorite discontinued product? Anything you would like to see make a comeback?
